Mary was born in Dundee on 4 Jul 1774 third child of George Chalmers, weaver, and his wife Catherine Cargill. She was baptised on 6 Jul, named after Mary Ogilvie and Mary Douglas. [1]
Mary grew up in Dundee and met Charles Robbie who had come from rural Angus to work in Dundee. They married on 30 Nov 1807. [2] Their first child was born there a year later on 6 Nov 1808. Their daughter Catherine was born there in 1811.
About 1812, Charles, Mary and family moved to the parish of St Vigeans living at Dickmountlaw for about four years and then moving into the nearby village of Marywell.
Charles Robbie and Mary Chalmers had five children:
1. Alexander b.1808 named after his uncle Alexander Robbie.
2. Catherine b. 1811 named after her maternal grandmother Catherine Cargill. she mar. William Raitt
3. Charles b.1813 died young.
4. Andrew b. 1815 marr. (1) Isabel Stalker and (2) Jane Fairlie he farmed Holemill
5. James b. 1818
Catherine died about 1830. her widowed husband married in 1836.
