Biography

Catherine was born in Dundee about 1811 second child to Charles Robbie and his first wife Mary Chalmers.

Her parents moved to St Vigeans Parish while she was a young child and they lived at Dickmontlaw and then about 1816 close by into the village of Marywell.

Her mother died perhaps about 1820. Her father moved to a small farm of 20 acres on Grange of Conon about 1830.

On 29 May 1833, Catherine married William Raitt, son to a neighbouring crofter, James Raitt. [1] They likewise took a croft at Grange of Conon next door to her father and William continued as a handloom weaver. [2]

William Raitt and Catherine had three children:

1. Charles b.1835 mar. Ann Mollison

2. Mary b. 1841 mar. James Milne

3. William b.1847 died unmarried age 22 in 1869.

By 1851 still at Grange of Conon, William had become a quarrier in the local sandstone pavement quarry. Their eldest son Charles then aged 16, had taken over the Handloom weaving at home.

William and Catherine moved into Gowanbank Village, Colliston and by 1861 William was a stone quarry contractor employing 16 men.Their daughter Mary now operated the hand loom weaving linen at home. Her illegitimate baby Joseph Watt lived with them.

William and Catherine then moved to an eight acre croft at Colliston Mill where he continued as a quarrier. Their grandson, Joseph Watt, then a scholar in 1871, lived with them.

By 1881 William had retired from quarry work and continued as a crofter of eight arable acres. Their grandson, Joseph, now 20, was a Quarry Firemen controlling the blasting.

In 1891 the Census shows William as a 74 year old farmer at Colliston Mill with Catherine aged 77 farmer's wife and their granddaughter Catherine R. Watt (9) a scholar and also a servant girl aged 13. Next door at the pendicle of Colliston Mill, their widowed daughter Mary lived with her thee children by the deceased James Milne.

William died at Colliston Mill on 29 Jan 1893 aged 78 . [3]

Just over two years later Catherine died at Colliston Mill on 8 Oct 1895 aged 84 years.

Carherine was buried in Arbroath Western Cemetery Comp.E Lair 8 beside her husband.
