Wilfred was born on November 5, 1893 in Charlevoix, Michigan to Fred Chapel and Inie Gage.[1] He was the only child for six years until his brother Franklin was born. His father was a licensed pharmacist with his own shop in downtown Charlevoix, and his mother was a college-educated newspaper writer.[2][3] Sadly, Wilfred tied of tuberculosis on May 12, 1911 in Hennepin Co., Minnesota.[4] He was seventeen. In their grief, the family sold the business and moved to Oregon after his death.
