Biography

Notables Project
John Cheke MP is Notable.

The eldest son of Peter Cheke and his wife, Agnes Duffield, John Cheke was born in Cambridge on the 16th of June 1514. [1] [2] He was educated at St John’s College, Cambridge, where his tutor was George Day, graduating in 1530 and obtaining an MA in 1533. [2] He was appointed to the Greek chair in 1540 having among his pupils Roger Ascham and William Grindal while in 1541 his sister, Mary, was married to William Cecil.

John was appointed tutor to Prince Edward, the son and heir of the king, Henry VIII, on the 7th of July 1544. [1]

On the 11th of May 1547 he married Mary, daughter of Richard Hill of Hartley Wintney in Hampshire and his wife, Elizabeth Isley, [3] who bore him three sons, [2] Henry, John and Edward. [4]

He was first elected to Parliament as member for Bletchingley on the 1st of October 1547 and held the seat again in 1553. [5]

Henry VIII died 28 January 1547 and John’s 10 year old pupil, Prince Edward, became king as Edward VI. Suspected of involvement in the attempt of Thomas Seymour to gain control over the king, John managed to remain in his place and was knighted with William Cecil on the 11th of October 1551. [6]

The king died in 1553 and John gave his support to Lady Jane Grey. He was committed to the Tower in July by Queen Mary but was released in 1554 and given leave to go abroad.[2] His behaviour whilst abroad convinced Philip II of Spain, husband of Queen Mary, that John and Sir Peter Carew were conspiring against the Queen. The Spanish king had the pair kidnapped and returned to England where they were imprisoned in the Tower. Faced with the alternative of burning he abjured Protestantism.[2][1]

Sir John wrote his will and died on the 13th of September 1557 at Peter Osborne's house in Wood Street in London, appointing his wife, Mary, and his friend Peter Osborne executors and Sir John Mason as overseer of his will. [2] He was buried in St Alban's Church in Wood Street. [1]
