Biography

Lily Cheyne was born at Mount Eden, Auckland, New Zealand on 22nd April 1878. ^[1] She was the fifth child and third daughter of John Cheyne and his wife Ellen "Helen" Henry.

On 27th March 1919 Lily is believed to have married Robert Arthur Dickinson in New Zealand. The Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages in New Zealand has a record of Robert Arthur Dickinson marrying "Lily Cleague" on that date. ^[2] Although Lily's surname is obviously not spelt the usual way her name is recorded, no New Zealand marriage of a Lily [or variant] Cheyne could be found prior to this 1919 marriage, nor is there any marriage record for a Cleague … either male or female … marrying between 1880 and 1919. The search for an earlier … or a later … marriage of Robert proved equally negative.

The couple had one daughter, Ellen Hannah, born 26th March 1920. ^[3]

Lily died at Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand on 15th March 1955. Although the source already attached to this profile ^[4] records her age as 77, the age recorded on the official New Zealand death registrations website a few moments ago states her age as 72 … ie, Lily Dickinson, 72 [sic] years, registration number 1955/ 19097 [accessed 30th March 2022]. As she's actually one month short of her 77th birthday, a query has been sent to the Department of Internal Affairs as '72' may be a typo [email sent 31 March 2022]. Regardless of her age, Lily was buried with her husband at the Old Huntly Cemetery in Waikato, in Row 7, Block SE, Plot 13. ^[5] The ashes of their daughter, Ellen Hannah Geck were buried with Lily and Robert when she died in September 2001.
