Biography

Robert Arthur Dickinson was born in 1875.^[1] He immigrated to New Zealand with his mother Hannah Fletcher and sister, Emma Dickinson arriving in Auckland on 9th September 1879 on the ship Famenoth. ^[2]. An Article in the Auckland Star on 9 September 1879 shows the full passenger list ^[3].

On 27th March 1919 Robert is believed to have married Lily Cheyne in New Zealand. The Registrar-General of Births, Deaths and Marriages in New Zealand has a record of Robert Arthur Dickinson marrying "Lily Cleague" on that date. ^[4] Although Lily's surname is obviously not the usual way her name is recorded, no New Zealand marriage of a Lily [or variant] Cheyne could be found prior to this 1919 marriage, nor is there any marriage record for a Cleague … either male or female … marrying between 1880 and 1919. The search for an earlier … or a later … marriage of Robert proved equally negative.

The couple had one daughter, Ellen Hannah, born the day before their first wedding anniversary. ^[5]

Robert died in Hamiton on 17th March 1943 aged 68 years. He was buried at the Old Huntly Cemetery in Waikato …in Row 7, Block SE, Plot 13 … with his wife Lily, and the ashes of their daughter. ^[6][7]
