Biography
Samuel Chilcote was a Pennsylvanian.
Samuel, son of Robinson Chilcote and Jemima Chilcote, was born 17 September 1814 in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania.[1] Soon after his birth his family moved to what became Madison Township, Perry County, Ohio, where they were among the earliest settlers,[2] owned a farm,[3][4] and helped establish the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church.[5]
In 1860, Samuel (age 45, farmer on his own land) and Elizabeth (35) resided in Madison Township with Elizabeth's mother Mahala Beard (68), and their children Alfred Beard (16), Mary Ann Beard (14), Martha Beard (11), William Beard (7), James (4) and Maria (3).[10]
His wife Elizabeth died in 1864.[11] His mother[12] and brother Robinson both died in 1872.[13]
On 13 November 1877 in Perry County, he remarried to Mary Ann Moore.[14]

Research Note
Beard Children: It seems likely that the 1860 enumerator erred in listing Alfred, Mary, Martha and William as "Beard."[10] At this time it is fairly common to give children the mother's maiden name as a middle name. Samuel and Elizabeth married in 1842;[6] the oldest child was born about 1843-44. They cannot be Mahala's children as she was widowed before 1840.[17] Thus, it seems likely that "Beard" is their middle name.
