Biography

Jamima Chilcote was a Marylander.

Jemima, daughter of Humphrey Thomas Chilcote and Sarah Ensor,[1] was born 4 August 1778 in Baltimore County, Maryland.[2][3][4] The Chilcote family owned several hundred acres in what is now Lutherville, Baltimore County.[5]

On 31 May 1810 in Western Run, Baltimore County, she is said to have married Robinson Chilcote,[6] son of James Chilcote Sr. and Elizabeth Ensor. (Their mothers were sisters—both daughters of George Ensor and Elizabeth Reeves—which makes them first cousins.) They had at least six children:

Jamima Chilcote was a Pennsylvanian.
Jamima Chilcote was an Ohioan.

Early in the 19th century, much of the Chilcote family moved to Huntingdon and/or Bedford County, Pennsylvania, including the Robinson Chilcotes. Darby, Joshua and Samuel were all born in Huntingdon County, but Jemima and Robinson continued to move west, finally settling in what became Madison Township, Perry County, Ohio,[27] before Micajah's birth in 1816.[23][28][29][30]

About 1818 a class that later became Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church met in her house until 17 April 1819, when the congregation purchased two acres and built a wood-hewn church which stood until 1838. The first trustees were Robinson, James and Nathan Chilcote, Joseph Claypool, James Porter, Nicholas Rible and John Shaw. The wooden church was replaced by a brick one in 1838.[31]

By 1850, Robinson (68, farmer on own land) and Jemima Chilcote (70) owned a farm in Madison Township, where they lived with their sons Micajah "Michael" (33, farmer) and Robinson Chilcote (32, farmer).[28] The household composition was similar in 1860: Robinson (age 78, farmer, b. Maryland), Jemima (81, b. Maryland), Micajah (41, b. Ohio) and Robinson (40, b. Ohio) with the addition of Darby's son Henry C, Chilcote (16, b. Ohio).[29]

After her husband Robinson's death in 1864,[32] Jemimah's (age 92) sons Michael (age 54, farmer on his own land) and Robinson (52, farmer on his own land) took over management of the Madison Township farm, while their niece (Joshua's daughter) Jemimah Holler (44, b. Pennsylvania) served as their housekeeper.[30]

Jamima died 19 March 1872 in Madison Township at age 93[3][4] and was buried at Bethel Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Somerset, Perry County.[2]

Research Notes

  • Given name: Jemima is the the expected spelling; however her gravestone,[2] which lists her birth in Baltimore County, shows Jamima.
  • Birth Date: No birth or baptismal record has been located; however, the headstone she shares with her husband Robinson provides her date of death and age at death.[2][4] The calculation may be off a day or two depending on the method of calculation.
  • Birth Place: Her indexed death record indicates she was born in Pennsylvania;[4] however, her headstone reflects her birth in Baltimore County,[2] where she was also married.

It names his living heirs and children as Prudence, Jemima (husband: Robinson Chilcote), Honour, Humphrey (wife: Nancy), Elizabeth, Sairah, and Micajah Chilcote. The record spells their surname as both Chilcott and Chilcote. The 416 acres of land between Saddle Back Hill in Springfield Township and Shirley Township abutting that of Benjamin Brown was sold for $93. The land had originally been surveyed by and a warrant granted to John and Humphrey Chilcote on 19 January 1793.
