Biography

Cpl Albert Chittenden served in the United States Army Air Service in World War I
Service started: 5 Jun 1917
Unit(s): 88th Aero Service Squadron Medical Detachment
Service ended: 20 March1919

Albert Newton Chittenden was born in Illinois in 1885. He was the son of Rev. Albert Jerome Chittenden and Eliza J Partridge. Albert’s father was a minister, teacher, and a published poet and author. His pastoral duties led the family to many locals including Colorado, Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee, but when Albert was 7 years old, the family made a final move to Massachusetts in 1892. This was likely due to the Reverend’s failing health due to Bright’s Disease.

Albert became a mechanic, or machinist as they were then called, working in the new field of automobiles. In 1915, he married Bertine B Kendall in Boston, Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Robert Kendall and Belle Baldwin. No known children were born to Albert and Bertine.

On 5 June 1917, Albert enlisted in World War I. He reached the rank of Corporal with the Medical Detachment of the 88th Aero Service Squadron. He was demobilized on 20 March 1919, and 5 months later, on 21 August 1919, Albert committed suicide by gun shot, likely another casualty of war.
