Biography

Robert Lyman Chittenden was born in Colorado in 1878. He was the eldest of five children born to Albert Jerome Chittenden and Eliza Jackson (Partridge) Chittenden.

Robert was raised in Boulder, Colorado where his father presided over the Congregational Church and was active in politics, running for the Governor of Colorado on the Greenback ticket. However, as Robert’s father’s health began to fail (kidney disease), the family relocated to Massachusetts (presumably to be nearer family - Robert’s mother had relatives in Massachusetts).

In Massachusetts, Robert met and married Serena D Mason in Everett, Middlesex County, Massachusetts on 15 May 1911. Serena was the daughter of Almon L Mason and Mary Story.

Robert and “Rena” began married life in Lubec, Maine where Robert worked as a Lithographer for American Can Company, which was the world’s largest can company. Some time between 1917 and 1930, Robert was promoted to Lithograph Foreman and transferred to Kansas City, Missouri.

Robert and Serena had only one child who died at 32 years of age.
