Biography

Ann Mourning Christian was born circa 1706 in Charles City County, Virginia to Thomas and Rebecca (New) Christian. Ann's father sold 175 acres on Beaverdam Creek to Samuel Coleman on the 17th of July 1731, which was recorded on their Wedding Day.[citation needed] She died after 1764 in Goochland County, Virginia.

Children of Samuel and Ann Coleman were:

  1. James Jeremiah Coleman, SGT in REV WAR 1733–1788
  2. Samuel Coleman 1735–1803
  3. Daniel Coleman
  4. John Coleman

Deeds

From her father to her husband, Samuel Coleman:

  • 17 Jun 1731, Thomas Christian to Samuel Coleman, both of Goochland County, £25, 175 acres bound by Beaverdam Creek
witnesses: Robert Christian, John Cox, John Coleman
20 Jul 1731 Court: Rebecca, wife of Thomas Christian relinquishes dower right, Teste: Henry Wood, Cl. Cur.[1]
  • 9 Jun 1756, James, Samuel and Ann Coleman of Goochland County to John Pleasants & Son of Henrico, £63/3/10, on or before 1 Jun 1760 with interest, receipt of £0/10, 248 acres on Beaverdam Creek where Ann lives, 4 negroes: Peter, Tom, Philice, and Benny, and household goods, horses, cows, and pigs
witnesses: Thos. Pleasants, Geo. Robinson, Robert Pleasants Jr., Jacob Oglesby, Ben Watkins
18 Jun 1756 Court: James and Ann M. Coleman acknowledge deed of mortgage and ordered recorded, Teste: Val. Wood Cl. Cur.[2]

St. James Northam Parish Vestry Book

Ann Mourning Coleman was reimbursed in 1758 for keeping Rachel Gavin, in 1759 through 1764 for keeping Mrs. Gavin, and in 1761 for keeping David Clark(e) for five months.[3]

Research Notes

It's been repeated that the date of the deed from Thomas Christian to Samuel Coleman was his and Ann's "wedding day". However the deed neglects to mention their marriage or Ann at all. Their marriage record is missing from the Douglas Register (although their son Samuel's marriage to Ann Wright in 1756 is there), and from the Goochland County Marriage Bonds 1730-1853 microfilmed and available online. It seems that the deed date has been chosen as an approximaton of their wedding date.

Christian-1117 and Christian-541 appear to represent the same person because: Hello,

Christian-541 was attached to the wrong parents, contrary to the source (a website) which has her parents as Thomas and Rebecca (New) Christian and husband Samuel Coleman who lived in Goochland. These two profiles represent the same person. Please accept the merge request. Thanks!
