... In the early time this Square was called Clarke’s Square , after Major Thomas Clarke , a wealthy merchant, who own ed considerable land immediately about the old meeting-house , and who lived in a large brick house enclosed by a brick wall . His daughter Elizabeth married Elisha Hutchinson, the grandfather of the governor. Later on , Clarke’s Square was known as Frizell’s Square , after John Frizell , who bought a portion of Clarke’s land in the rear of the meeting-house and built several houses upon it. For the past hundred years North Square has been the accepted name, and it would seem likely now to continue, though of that there is no certainty . ...

... Thomas Clarke, whose possessions were on both sides of the street, was a wealthy merchant, a member of the Artillery Company and a deputy. He died in 1683 leaving a wife and two daughters, one of whom, Elizabeth, married first John Freake, and second Elisha Hutchinson, grandson of William and Anne. His wharf, which corresponds with the north side of Lewis Wharf, became famous when owned by Thomas Hancock and his nephew, John Hancock. ... In 1643 he had removed to Boston, his home lot and warehouse being on the north side of the cove into which the mill creek flowed. His house, when he died, was on what is now North Square, previously Clark Square ... He was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Ar- tillery, its Lieutenant in 1639 and 1651; Captain 1653 and 1656, and Sergeant Major of the Suffolk Regiment in 1673, then a rank as high as that of Colonel ... Major Thomas Clark died 13 March, 1683. In his will after bequests to his widow and his daughters and sons-in-law, he mentions his sister Elizabeth Stoughton, widow of Israel. ... Allan, the link that I added to the Worcester Art Center is very interesting. Oil portraits of her with daughter, Mary and also of John Freake. There is a bio (sourced/footnotes) for Elizabeth Clarke Freake in the article.

I don't know if it is legal to upload the portraits?? Do you know?
