Biography

Harvey Clark was born in Burke county on January 10, 1803, to Alexander "Sandy" Clarke and Mary "Polly" Presswood. He was married February 1, 1820 to Ruth Shell. Harvey and Ruth Clark moved up into the mountains along the Linville River near the Linville Gap. This area was also known as the Linville Cove area. They had thirteen children between 1823 and 1847:

During the Civil War Harvey Clark was said to be a Union sympathizer. His sons, Drury, Philson, and Estes, would serve in the Union Army. Prior to the Union service, the three brothers were conscripted into Confederate service against their will. This was somewhat common in western North Carolina as the South needed troops and they would "volunteer" men to help replenish the depleted confederate regiments. Detroit and Dolphus L. Clarke were a part of the 26th NC Regiment and Thadius was in the 33rd NC Regiment. The three did not remain in service very long and were reported absent. Harvey died July 20, 1876, in Pineola in Caldwell County. Harvey and Ruth Clark were buried on their own land with several descendants. ^[1]
