Biography

James was a Methodist Minister.

James was born in 1868, the son of William M. Clayton and Sarah Elizabeth Gallaher. [1]

On the 11th of October, 1885, James Robert Clayton married Delia A. Lay in Giles, Tennessee. [2] James and Delia had the following children together:[3]

  • Stella M. - born January 1887 in Tennessee
  • Kynett - born February 1889 in Tennessee
  • Flora M. - born March 1892 in Tennessee
  • Lena A. - born March 1894 in Tennessee

Delia passed away on the 22nd of February, 1897 at the age of 28 (or 29). She was buried in the Smellage Cemetery in Putman, Tennessee.[4]

James married Laura White on the 16th of May, 1897, in Smith, Tennessee.[5] in 1900,[6] the couple have been married for 3 years and Laura has given birth to a little boy they named Carter S. who was born in January of 1899. James is 31 and Laura is 20 years old. James' occupation is listed as "Preacher". The family are living on a farm which they own without a mortgage in Civil District 2, Macon, Tennessee. Also in the home are Stella, Kynett, Flora and Lena.

Laura died on the 24th of July, 1901, at the age of 21. She was buried in the Smellage Cemetery in Putman, Tennessee. [7]

James married Hattie Mae McCaleb on the 13th of November, 1901, in Putnam, Tennessee.[8] The census of 1910[9] lists the family as living in Civil District 17, Putnam, Tennessee. The couple again own a farm, mortgage free and James is listed as an employer in the general farm industy. The couple have been married for 9 years. James is now 41 and Hattie is 36 years old. Hattie has given birth to 4 children, all of which are living:

  • Eva (7) - born 1903
  • Beattrice (4) - born 1906
  • Bulah (2) - born 1908
  • Ina - born in 1910

Also in the household are Lena (16) and Carter S. (11). Stella married Joseph Myrick in 1906.[10] Kynett married Edie McCullen in 1911[11] and Flora married Goodloe White in 1909 in Bryan, Oklahoma.[12]

In 1920[13] the family are living in Civil District 20 of Putnam, Tennessee. James occupation is again listed as Minister of the Gospel and they own their home mortgage free. Eva is now 16, Beattrice is 14, Bula is 12 and Ina is 9 years old. They have two new sisters:

  • Inell (7) - born 1913
  • Irene (4) - born 1916

The family is in the same location in 1930.[14] The census recorded that the family lives on a farm. James is still preaching the Gospel, and he was 17 years old when he married for the first time. James is now 60 and Hattie is 56 years old. Beatrice (24), Ina (19), Inell (17) and Irene (15) are still living at home. In 1940[15] James and Hattie have no children left at home. They are now living in Civil Distric 17 of Boma, Putnam, Tennessee. James' occupation is listed as farmer and they own their home. The census records that James finished high school, and Hattie completed the 8th grade. James is 71 and Hattie is 66 years old.

Hattie died on the 22nd of April in 1943. The cause of death was hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. She was 69 years, 6 months and 5 days old.[16] Hattie was buried in the Smellage Cemetry in Boma, Putnam, Tennessee. [17] James died on the 3rd of September, 1956. Cause of death was congestive heart failure due to arteriosclerosis.[18] He was 88 years old. He and Hattie are buried next to each other. [19]
