John Fullerton Cleland was born in Edinburgh in 1821 to William Lennox Cleland and Henrietta Erskine Fullerton.[1][2]
He married Elizabeth Glen in Northumberland in 1845.[3]
John died in 1901.[4] His Obituary is reproduced below:
OBITUARY.
Mr. John Fullerton Cleland died on Nov. 29, at the residence of his son, Mr. E. E. Cleland, East-terrace, Adelaide. Mr. Cle-land, who was a colonist of 49 years, was born in Edinburgh in 1821. He was the son of Mr. William Lennox Cleland, bar-rister, who was drowned at the age of 32, and he was placed under the guardianship of Sir John Stuart, Vice-Chancellor. After leaving school he entered the service of the East India Company as a midshipman upon the Reliance. When Mr. Cleland finally left that ship she proceeded on a voyage, and was never heard of again. He afterwards entered the service of the London and Counties Bank. Subsequently he studied theology at Oxford, and having married Miss Elizabeth Glen, daughter of Dr. George Glen, of London, and sister of Mr. George Gien, S.M., of Mount Gambier, he proceeded to China as a missionary. After remaining at Hongkong and Canton for some years he returned to England on ac-count of ill-health. The deceased gentleman came to South Australia in 1852, and occu-pied the position of Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Marriages for many years. The members of his family surviv-ing him are his sister, Lady Davenport, and six sons— Dr. Cleland, of Parkside, co- lonial surgeon, Messrs. G. F. Cleland, of Adelaide, wine merchant, E. D. Cleland, of Coolgardie, mine manager, C. A. Cle-land, of Adelaide, surveyor, A. F. Cleland, of Queensland, railway engineer, and E. E. Cleland, of Adelaide, solicitor.
He is buried at the Walkerville Wesleyan Cemetery, Walkerville, South Australia and from The Register of Saturday 30 November 1901 we see:
THE Friends of the late Mr. JOHN FULLAR-TON CLELAND are informed that his FUNERAL will Leave the Residence of his Son (Mr. E. E. Cleland), East terrace, THIS DAY at 3 p.m., for the Walkerville Cemetery.
