From the South Australian newspapers of that time more specifically the Evening Journal of Tuesday the 14th of August 1877 we see:

William died in Adelaide in 1918.[3]

William Lennox Cleland was interred at the Walkerville Wesleyan Cemetery and from the Advertiser of Wednesday the 6th of November 1918 we see:

CLELAND.-The FRIENDS of the late Dr. WIL-LIAM LENNOX CLELAND are respectfully informed that his Funeral will leave his late residence, Beaumont. Burnside, on WEDNESDAY at 2 p.m., for the Walkerville Cemetery.

Many Obituries appeared in the Adelaide Newsapers at this time including this one from Chronicle of Saturday 9th of November 1918:

Dr. William Lennox Cleland, who was superintendent of the Parkside Mental Hospital for nearly 40 years, died on No- vember 5. He was a highly respected citizen, with a remarkably even tempera- ment, nerves of iron, and robust intellec- tual powers, for despite his long experience among the mentally afflicted, he used to declare that the work was not at all de- pressing. Many tributes have been paid to his humane instincts, and his courtesy to all. His consideration for the inmates was well known, and he was regarded by the patients and attendants more as a father than an overseer or director. Dr. Cleland was born at Hongkong on January 18, 71 years ago. On the death of his father he became the head of an old Ayr- shire family— the Clelands of Cleland— which was said to be related to the great Scottish patriots, William Wallace and Robert Bruce. His father was a mission- ary in Hongkong, but subsequently became Registrar-General of Births, Deaths, and Mariages in South Australia. Having re- ceived his early education in Adelaide, Dr. Cleland continued his studies in Berne, Switzerland, and afterwards at the Edin- burgh University, where he took the de- gree of Bachelor of Medicine in 1876. He became interested in the treatment of lunacy early in his professional career, and spent some time at the Derby and Morningside (Edin- burgh) Asylums. Shortly after his return he took up the work here. Two asylums existed then, one being on North-terrace, in the premises since converted into the Consumptives' Home. The young graduate was placed in charge of the Park- side institution in 1878. Only the central structure stood when he went out there. Dr. Cleland re- tired on February 1, 1915, when he was granted twelve months' leave of absence on full pay by the Government. He settled down in his peaceful and picturesque plantation of olive and almond trees at Beaumont. Although he devoted himself while in harness chiefly to his duties at Parkside, he was for several years a lec- turer at the Adelaide University, and he was president of the South Australian branch of the British Medical Society in 1890. From 1898 to 1900 he was president of the Royal Society of South Australia. He was president of the Mental Science and Education section at the congress in 1901 of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science. In 1896 Dr. Cle- land was appointed Colonial Surgeon in succession to the late Dr. A. S. Pater- son. In 1878 Dr. Cleland married Miss Matilda Lauder Burton, third daughter of the late Mr. J. H. Burton, LL.D., Historiographer Royal of Scotland. His widow and two sons sur- vive. One of them, Dr. John B. Cleland, is associated with the Public Health De- partment in New South Wales, and the other, Captain W. L. Cleland, B.Sc., of the 3rd Australian Pioneers, is in France. There are five brothers — Messrs. E. E. Cleland, K.C., G. F. Cleland (the vigneron), C. A. Cleland (College Town), A. F. Cle- land (Kurrawang, W.A.), and E. D. Cle- land (Kalgoorlie) .
