Biography

Petticoat Lane is a famous street market, with both shops and market stalls. The real name of the street is Middlesex Street but locals still always call it Petticoat Lane as the Census taker did. Deborah must have had a shop at number 8 and lived above the shop. These days, since most of the market is in Wentworth Street, that also is known as Petticoat Lane.

His father's name is given as Nathaniel. Deborah's father's name is given as Moshe Cohen. Coleman's address is given as 23 Wentworth Street, Whitechapel. 23 Wentworth Street is still a shop in Petticoat Lane Market, with a flat above the shop.

In the New and Hambro Synagogue marriage records, however, Deborah's father's name is given as Asher. All other details are the same as in the synagoguescribes record.

1841 Census living at Grove Street (west side), Whitechapel. But she must have kept on the 23 Wentworth Street shop because it was from that address that her grandson Woolf Moses was married in 1884.

1851 Census Address 8 Petticoat Lane, parish of St Botolph Bishopsgate, City of London. The address is actually 8 Sandys Row - Petticoat Lane's real name is Middlesex Street and Sandys Row is an extension of Middlesex Street. Head of household is Deborah Moses age 45, general dealer. Her birthplace is given as Middlesex. Her youngest two children Jane 10 scholar, Solomon 8 scholar Deborah's sisters Martha Cohen 35 and Sarah Cohen 40.

1861 Census Deborah Moses age 53, widow at 8 Sandys Row. Born Aldgate. Daughter Jane age 20, tailoress. Born Commercial Road.

According to Hambro Synagogue records, her address up to 1870 was still 8 Sandys Row.

Death GRO ref is 1c 8, registered in London City in March 1870, died age 63 as Deborah Moses.

I think Deborah must have been buried in the Hoxton Jewish cemetery near where she lived. It was open from 1707 until 1878. It was demolished in 1878 and bodies buried there were transferred to West Ham Jewish cemetery. There is a record of a Deborah Moses being buried in West Ham on 27 February 1877 (3 Adar 5647). Her burial plot in West Ham is Section J Row 6 Plot 40. I don't think gravestones were transferred from Hoxton but haven't yet been to West Ham to check.
