Biography

Joseph Stephens Cole was a son of Joseph Cole Jr. (1734-1809) and Elizabeth (Southworth; (1735-abt.1816) ^[1]. His birth may have occurred on 9 Aug 1767 at Bridgewater, Massachusetts, but was recorded at Brockton ^[2].

Joseph S. Cole married Sarah (Rhodes) Cole (abt.1766-1837) on June 7, 1789, in Chesterfield, Massachusetts ^[3]. They had several children, some of whom are documented.

This family migrated from Massachusetts to central New York state probably about 1800, as their daughter Deidamia was born in New York ^[9], yet their earlier children were born in Massachusetts. They settled in central Onondaga County, just south of Syracuse, at which time this was woodland wilderness.

Joseph Stephens Cole died on June 9, 1833, in Lafayette, New York, at the age of 65. His grave is represented to be in LaFayette Cemetery, LaFayette, Onondaga County, New York, USA ^[10]. No grave marker is depicted.

Notes

Joseph's wife, Sarah Rhoades, was a daughter of Sarah (Frothingham; 1740-1809) & Samuel Rhodes (1737-1823), who moved from Massachusetts to Onondaga County, New York after the American Revolutionary War.
