Biography

Joseph Cole Jr. was born in 1734 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts, a son of Joseph Cole and Mary (Stephens). Whether he was born in Plympton or nearby Bridgewater, Massachusetts, is not certain, however his father owned land in Bridgewater [1].

Joseph Cole Jr. married Elizabeth 'Betty' Southworth on December 8, 1757, in Bridgewater, Massachusetts [2]. They had at least three children:

Joseph served the British cause as a Corporal in the Crown Point Expedition in 1755; also as a Sergeant in Col. Dwight's Regiment in 1756 during the French and Indian War.

American Revolutionary War service: The following appears in the caption of his online memorial site: Cole,Joseph (also given Jr.), Bridgewater, Sergeant, Capt. Josiah Hayden's co. of Minute-men, Col. Bailey's regt., which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775; service, 12 days; also. Ensign, Capt. Josiah Haden's co., Gen. John Thomas's regt.; list of officers; commissioned May 19, 1775; also, same co. and regt.; muster roll dated Aug. 1, 1775; engaged Ma}- 1, 1775; service, 3 mos. 1 week, 1 da}' ; also, company return dated Oct. 6, 1775 ; also, muster roll for Sept. and Oct. [year not given, probably 1775], dated Camp at Roxbury ; also, 1st Lieutenant, Capt. Elisha Mitchel's co., Col. Cary's regt. ; list of officers; commissioned Feb. 21, 1776; regiment raised to serve as a reinforcement to the Continental Army until April, 1776 ; also, Lieutenant, same co. and regt. ; service, 5 days, from time of enlistment to time of marching; roll dated April 2, 1776; also, Captain, Col. Robinson's regt. [service not given] ; company roll made up from July 6, 1777, for 6 mos. service at Rhode Island, and sworn to in Plymouth Co.; also. Captain, Col. John Jacobs's regt.; engaged Jan. 1, 1778; service, 12 mos. 2 days, at Rhode Island ; enlistment to expire Jan. 1, 1779 ; roll sworn to in Suffolk Co." An online memorial site indicates that Joseph Cole Jr. died in 1809 in Plymouth County, Massachusetts; burial details are unknown [3].
