Biography

Mary "Polly" Walker was born on June 30, 1767 in Elbert County, Georgia to parents Rev. Jeremiah Walker and Mary Jane Graves.

She married John James Coleman on 22 Feb 1785 in Elbert, Georgia.[1] They migrated from Petersburg, Georgia with her husband to Huntsville, Alabama. They had 9 children of which only 4 lived to adult hood:

  1. Elizabeth Walker Coleman Figures (1785–1860)
  2. Narcissa Graves Coleman (1789 – unknown)
  3. Melinda
  4. Delia Coleman Sale (1797–1881)
  5. John James Coleman (1804–1864)

She died in 1830 in Madison County, Alabama. Her burial is unknown but she has a Find a Grave Memorial.[2]

Will of Jeremiah Walker:[3]
Polly was listed in the will of her father, Jeremiah Walker, along with her step-mother, Milly (Colson) Walker, and siblings, Henry Greaves Walker, Memorable Walker, Jeremiah Walker, James Sanders Walker, John William Walker, and Elizabeth Marshall as recorded in the Elbert County Will Records, Books A-C, 1791-1803. Jeremiah Walker's brother, Sanders Walker and his friend James Tate were appointed executers. The will was dated 14 Sept 1792,

"I send to my daughter Polly Coleman during her natural life the first female child that Esther, Sally or Prudence shall have if they have any to live to be two years old to be at her dispose during her natural life and then to be equally divided between her three daughters Elizabeth , Narcissa and Melanda to them and their heirs forever I also give my Black Walnut Table, part of my Croccory (Crockery) Ware and part of My Books--"
