Born 1840 Hull Drypool

Sarah Ann Colley was born in 1840. ^[1]

Sarah is the daughter of John Colley and his wife Mary Norton.

Schoolgirl 1851 Sutton on Hull

In 1851 Sarah Colley is ten years old living in Union Court Sutton with her father 44 a mariner born in Kenningham, an alternative name for Keyingham in Holderness east of Hull where her mother was also born. One younger brother William 4 is also at school but the baby John is inly 6 months, All the children were born in Hull or perhaps technically in Sutton a village over two miles outside the city but whose parish boundaries were being crossed by buildings like Union Court. ^[2]

Milliner 1861 Hull

Sarah Colley was now a milliner or hatmaker and her father was now clearly sailing a Humber Sloop or sailing barge. They had moved house to Blyth Street just east of the River Hull. ^[3]

Marriage in St Andrews Church, Hull 1861

In 1861 when Dickinson Tate was about 21, he married Sarah Ann Colley in Hull Sculcoates St Andrew.. ^[4]

A Seaman's Wife 1871

In 1871 Sarah Ann Tate aged 29 was in Hull with her daughters Alice 5 and Mary E just 2, while her husband was away on the Humber and did not reach the census returns. ^[5]

Ballast Lighterman 1881 Stoneferry Hull

The men of this family appear twice in the 1881 census. Dickinson Tate was a Ballast Lighterman in 1881 in Hull with his son and his father in law John Colley who was 72 but apparently still active in the same trade. ^[6] Sarah Ann Tate is in Union Court, Witham in 1881, close to the centre of Hull but in the Sutton Parish. Her husband Dickinson Tate is with her, a Ballast Lighterman, with their son John H Tate and Sarah's father John Colley who was 73 but apparently still active in the same trade. Next door is her brother Robert W Colley. also a ballast lighterman. ^[7]

1891 Union Court

In 1891 son John Henry Tate is living in a two room flat with his wife Jane and two young daughters and a lodger, next door to his mother Sarah Tate and grandmother Mary Colley, who were also in two rooms at Witham Union Court. (Witham, close to the centre of Hull, was then still in Sutton Parish. This is the same address as ten years earlier for the Tates). All seven are born in Hull. ^[8]

Death 1918 Hull

Sarah Ann died just before the end of the First World War, still in Sculcoates, Hull and 77 years old. ^[9]
