Mary was born in 1869 in the Myton ward of Hull. She is the daughter of Dickinson Tate and his wife Sarah Colley.

Mary E. Tate age 12, a schoolgirl, is in Union Court, Witham in 1881, close to the centre of Hull but in the Sutton Parish. Her mother Sarah Ann and father Dickinson Tate are with her, a Ballast Lighterman, with her brother John H Tate, only 17 but also orking aboard the lighter.
Her grandparents John and Mary Colley are also in the household. [1]

When Mary Tate was just 21 she married John William Bone, a labourer about 13 years older than herself, probably in St Jude's Church, Hull. [2]

In 1891 Mary Elizabeth Bone is with her new husband in Montrose Terrace in Stanley St. near Botanic Station in Hull. [3]
