Martha was born in Mar 1866 according to the 1880 and 1900 census, to William Collins and Levisa Ratliff according to the 1870 and 1880 census. Starting with our earliest record of her, she is listed in the 1870 Census in Paintsville Postoffice in Paintsville, Johnson, Kentucky as a girl of 5, and her given race is "Indian". She is born reportedly in 1865 in Kentucky. She is still living in the same area 10 years later, this time the only difference is she is listed as "Mulatto". In 1900, the first year she took a census with her spouse, John Q Adams, she is from then on listed as "white". She had at least 8 children, 6 whom were living in 1910. She married John Quincy Adams, also of Kentucky. Indeed, the Collins family was regarded as Indigenous and this Adams family she married into was the first families of Old Dominion (House of Burgesses). Martha Jane Collins and John Quincy Adams went on to have a certain daughter Anna May Adams, who died prematurely when her only baby, my mother, Anna Jewel Romans, was still just a small child.

DNA Confirmation
Paternal and Maternal relationships are both confirmed by an autosomal GEDmatch comparison between Jerry Martin , GEDmatch kit # ZU4805621, and Mary (Welch) Hajduk, GEDmatch kit # HA5976351, (compare kits), his 2nd cousin 1x removed. Their most-recent common ancestors are William Collins and Levisa Ratliff, the great great grandparents of Jerry Martin and great grandparents of Mary (Welch) Hajduk. Predicted relationship from GEDmatch: 3.9 generations to estimated MRCA, based on sharing 65.4 cM across 3 segments.
Research Notes
There were many marriages between the Collins and Ratliff families, at least three siblings from one family in this generation alone married three siblings from the other. In addition to that, these tight knit groups had many kids and so there are many living descendents today.
Martha Jane Collins who married John Adams is not the same Martha Jane Collins who married George Bowen. Martha Collins Bowen appears in the 1900 with George Bowen married 1882 with 6 children born and 5 children living. See: "United States Census, 1900," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M94B-438 : accessed 4 January 2018), Martha A Bowen in household of George Bowen, Magisterial District 2, Johnson, Kentucky, United States; citing enumeration district (ED) 39, sheet 24A, family 429, NARA microfilm publication T623 (Washington, D.C.: National Archives and Records Administration, 1972.); FHL microfilm 1,240,534.
This differs greatly from the 1900 census with Martha Jane Collins found with John Adams in Magoffin, Kentucky. However, their names, place they grew up in, and lifetimes were very similar, nevertheless. It is likely that Martha Collins Bowen may have different parentage than that who is currently listed, William Collins and Levisa Ratliff. This tight knit family was very big; I believe Martha Collins Bowen may have been the daughter of Samuel J. Collins of John's Creek, Johnson, Kentucky, but without further proof, it might be best to leave the two Martha's under William and Levisa; the logic being that Martha Bowen likely IS a part of this family, given the name, place, region, and cultural practices of the time.

It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Martha:
Collins-16301 and Collins-20840 appear to represent the same person because: I'm not sure where the surname "Bowen" comes from but I believe this is my Martha Jane Collins who married John Quincy Adams.
