Collins was a very common name in Virginia from early times, and certainly there were more than one Collins family present in many areas of the Virginia colony. Unfortunately many early Virginia records were destroyed during the Revolutionary and Civil Wars so it is difficult to find locate birth, marriage and death records. As a result no one can state with certainty who the ancestors were of John Collins I of Maidstone, Kent County, England. That said one has to rely on books, manuscripts and publications which there are many and each have conflicting information. Biography
John Collins I was born about 1569 in England. He lived in the town or parish of Maidstone in Kent, England. During the reign of King Charles I, Maidstone seems to have remained in the hands of the King. For he drafted a letter patented 27 February 1631, granting "John Collins the office of Keeper of the House or "Goal" of Maidstone and the custody of all prisoners there to hold during his life." [1]
Although the wife of John Collins I is unknown he is believed to be the father of have had three children:
John Collins I died in Kent County, England in 1644 and in his will, he devised to his son, John Collins II his patent or grant of the King's goal with all the irons, implements, fees, and appurtenances. According to FindAGrave he was buried St. John at Hackney Churchyard, Hackney, London Borough of Hackney, Greater London, England. [2]
