Biography

Samuel was a Friend (Quaker) married at Bucks County (Pennsylvania) Monthly Meeting

Samuel Comly was born on 5 Jul 1835 in Byberry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, son of Charles Comly (1808 - 1894) and Debby Ann (Newbold) Comly (1812 - 1882).[1][2][3] His birth appears to have been recorded in the Byberry Monthly Meeting records.[4]

He married Emma Mott Vail (1842-1923) in Hunterdon, New Jersey (reported as Quakertown Monthly Meeting, but without access to the direct source, no further categorization is possible), 5 May 1860.[4][5] Comly Family in America (1939, p. 328) cites the marriage as 6-5-1860: "See Bucks Co. Meetings Records."[1]

Among their children were:

  1. Walter Seaman Comly (18 Mar 1862-1932),[6][5][4] who married Mary Watson Bosler,[1] daughter of Joseph Bosler, in 1891 Norristown, Montgomery, Pennsylvania[7]
  2. William Ward Comly (1864-1877)[4][1]
  3. Jeannette D (Comly) Cook (12 Nov 1866-1896),[5] of Portchester, who died in 1896 in Manhattan, New York[8] whose husband was Robert B M Cook[1]
  4. Anna Hanna B (Comly) Maples (born 12 Jul 1874)[5][9] whose husband was Frederick H Maples[1]

In 1850 Samuel (14) was living with his parents Charles (41, farmer) and Debby Ann (38), his siblings John, (18, miller), , Charles (9), Robert (7), Anna (5), Susan (2) and Jane Hamilton (21,domestic servant).[10]

In 1860, Samuel (24, wheelwright)was living with her parents Charles (52, farmer & miller) and Debby Ann (48) her siblings , Edward (22, farmer), Charles (19, miller), Robert (17, farmer), Anna (15), George (14), Susan (12), Ellen (7), Sarah (1) and five employees : Mary McQuilian (25, domestic servant), Eliza Roberson (15, domestic servant), Dennis Flanigan (60, farm laborer), John Williams (25, farm laborer) and Albert Wheatland (17, apprentice wheelwright). In 1880 Samuel and his wife Emma were living in Rye, Westchester, New York with their children Walter, Jeanette and Anna, a domestic servant named Celia Murry and a coachman named Joseph Dennis. [12]

In 1900 Samuel and his wife Emma were living in Rye, Westchester, New York with their grand daughter Emma (daughter of Jeannette who died in 1896), and two Swedish servants named Fredrick Parson and Matilda Bensen.

In 1910 Samuel and his wife Emma were living in Rye, Westchester, New York with their grand daughter Emma, an Irish servant named Maggie O'Connell and her son John.

Samuel Comly lived in Philadelphia until 1863 and then moved to Port Chester and filled until 1882 the position of secretary of the Russell, Burdsall and Ward Company in their large bolt and nuts works. The idea of sending men out over the country to sell the products of the Company was first conceived by Samuel Comly. In his prime, Mr. Comly’s master salesmanship was predominant in the bolt and nut industry of America.[13]

Then he became one of the organizers and one of the largest stockholders of the Port Chester Bolt & Nut Company, one of the largest manufacturies of the kind in the country giving employment to many men. He and his partner William L. Ward, a member of Congress, held the greater portion of the stock. [14]

Samuel Comly in his political views was a stanch Republican, but he never desired public office, preferring to devote his energies to his business.[15]

He was a member of the board of trustees of the village for a number of years and the president of the board of trade.[16]

In respect to religion, he was of the Quaker faith. [17]

Samuel died on 25 Jan 1923 in Port Chester, Rye, Westchester, New York aged 87,[18] and was buried at Amawalk, Westchester, New York.[4]
