John Comly was born on 21 Dec 1831 in Byberry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States, son of Charles Comly (1808 - 1894) and Debby Ann (Newbold) Comly (1812 - 1882).^[1][2]

In 1850 John, (18, miller) was living with her parents Charles (41, farmer) and Debby Ann (38), her siblings John, (18, miller), Samuel (14), Charles (9), Robert (7), Anna (5), Susan (2), and Jane Hamilton (21,domestic servant).^[3]

John married Sarah T Cadwallader (1825 - 1892) in 1859^[1] in Pennsylvania.

Among their children were:

1. William Gillam Comly (9 Mar 1862-25 Feb 1863)^[4][5]
2. Hannah Gillam (Comly) Pickering (1864 - 1942),^[6][7] who married John R Pickering, son of Edward and Rebecca Pickering, in 1894 Bucks, Pennsylvania^[8]
3. Charles W Comly (4 May 1868-1879)^[9][7][10]

Before 1880, John, a publishing assistant, married secondly, Rebecca^[11] Buckman (1835-1917).^[1] The 1900 census shows their marriage date estimates as about 1875.^[12]

John died on 4 May 1916 in Philadelphia aged 84.^[1]

Research Notes

• FamilySearch reports the marriage to Sarah as occurring at Middletown Monthly Meeting, Bucks, Pennsylvania, but this is without a source and does not presently map to a monthly meeting category. Nevertheless, his burial is consistent with Society of Friends (Quaker) recognition, as he was buried in the Byberry friends Burial Ground.
• The family seems to have been counted twice in the 1870 census, with a slight variation on some of the ages and the surname. It could be that the record is attached in error, but a closer examination is needed before detaching it as a source (noting also that the unrelated persons in the household differ):
