Birth

Freida Havens Cookingham was born 15 May 1914 in Chatham, Columbia County New York, to Foster Cookingham and his second wife, Addie Havens. ^[1] She first appeared in the 1915 New York State census as the one-year old daughter of Foster and Addie Cookingham. ^[2] She was also enumerated as a 5-year old in the 1920 census of Chatham. ^[3] In 1925, she was listed as an 11-year old daughter in Foster Cookingham's household in the New York State census taken that year. ^[4] She was still living in her father's household in the 1930 census, listed as a 15-year old single person, with no occupation. ^[5]

Freida's father, a local horse dealer in Chatham, committed suicide when she was 16. She never spoke much about this with her children or grandchildren, but it must have been a very difficult time for the family.

Education

Freida graduated from Chatham High School in 1931. A front-page photo in the Chatham Courier on 18 June 1931 included all the members of the graduating class; Freida was in the second row, 5th from the right. ^[6] She attended the Cortland Normal School, now the State University of New York at Cortland (SUNY Cortland), intending to become a teacher. She graduated from the program in 1934. ^[7]

Marriage

After graduation, Freida married George Erwin Hill on 30 June 1934, in McGraw, Cortland County, New York. ^[8] George and Freida were listed with their two sons in the 1940 census, as residents of Homer, Cortland County, New York. ^[9] The marriage ended on 5 April 1944, when George and Freida were separated by an official decree from the Cortland County family court. ^[10]

Death

Freida died on 9 September 1990 in Washington, D.C. and was buried in Stuyvesant Falls Cemetery in Stuyvesant Falls, Columbia County, New York. ^[11]
