Mary was born about 1845 in Massachusetts.
She was the daughter of Minerva and Thomas Cooly, and the sister-in-law of Civil War veteran Abraham A. Jackson of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, the first regiment in the United States made up entirely of enlisted men of color.
In 1850, she is attending school, probably in or near Sheffield, Massachusetts.
