Biography

Nathan was born in 1751.^[1] He was the son of Peter Coombs and Thankful Strout. He passed away in 1828.

Nathan Coombs was born at Brunswick, ME, on 25 Aug 1751; died 18 Nov 1828, age 77 years according to his grave record at the New Meadows Cemetery, Brunswick;^[2] his marriage intentions were published at Brunswick on 6 Feb 1778 to Sarah EWING of Harpswell ^[3] and they were married at Harpswell on 8 Mar 1778.^[4] Sarah was born at Harpswell, ME, in 1754 and she died 30 Jan 1841, aged 87 years. Sarah was buried next to her husband at the New Meadows Cemetery at Brunswick.^[5][6]

Military Service – Revolutionary War – Nathan was a Corporal in Capt. James Curtis’ co.; muster roll dated 1 Aug. 1775; enlisted 17 May 1775; service, 3 months, including allowance for 165 miles travel; also Capt. James Curtis’ co., Colonel James Cargill’s regt.; enlisted 9 Aug 1775; service, 5 months 5 days.^[7] Private, Capt. Silas Wild’s co., Colonel Edmund Phinney’s regt.; muster roll dated Garrison at Fort George, 8 Dec 1776; reported discharged 8 Oct 1776.^[8] He also served as a private in Capt. Benjamin Lemont’s co. in Col Nathaniel Wade’s regt. from first of Sep to first of Nov 1778 for two months.^[9] He received a pension of $36.60 per annum.

Sarah’s pension application [Maine 4312] and children’s pension application [W23848] states: MA Line, soldier d. 18 Nov 1828, soldier’s son John E. Coombs applied 28 Oct 1845 Cumberland County ME aged 62 a resident of Brunswick ME and stated soldier m. Sara Ewing on 8 Mar 1778 and widow [d.] 10 Jan 1841 leaving children; John E. Coombs, Jane Cummings also of Brunswick and Mary Sanford of Bath ME.^[10]
