Charles worked and lived on the canal boats until he began to work for his future father-in-law Thomas Carman. At this time the canal was the door through which poured immigrants going west. Our Williams ancestors( on the Carmen side) used the canal boats to move west from Bridgewater in Oneida County to Hector in 1838.
