Biography

John Cory, son of William Cory and Mary (Earle) Cory was born about 1655/1660 probably in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.[1] Note: there were no counties in Rhode Island until 1703.

  • 7 May 1679 On his petition, he was granted by assembly, land in East Greenwich, out of shares not taken up.[2][3]
  • 4 May 1680 John Correy, being a freeman of Portsmouth was admitted as freeman of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.[3]
  • 1686. Freeman.[2]
  • 22 March 1686 He, of Portsmouth, had 10 acres of land laid out to him in East Greenwich.[2]
  • 1700-1707 John Cory, yeoman of Portsmouth bought 104 acres in Kingstown from James Green and his wife Elizabeth[1]
  • 4 April 1705 He bought of Daniel Thurston, and wife Mary, of Newport, 90 acres in East Greenwich, for 40 pounds.[2]
  • 10 April 1705 He and wife Elizabeth, sold Jonathan Nichols, of Newport, 12 acres, for 90 pounds.[2]
  • 16 April 1705 He and wife Elizabeth, sold to William Brightman, of Newport, 50 acres for 350 pounds.[2]
  • 4 October 1707 He deeded son William, for love, &c., 90 acres, house and meadow, at East Greenwich. (Both he and son were of Portsmouth, at this date.[2]
  • 1707 Kings Town. Deputy.[2]
  • 1707-25 April 170[09] John Cory deeded to his son John, both of Kingstown, for love his homestead[1]

John married Elizabeth, estimated about 1680, before the birth of their first child also estimated at about 1682. She was still living 15 Dec 1713, when His son Thomas, with consent of mother Elizabeth, put himself apprentice to Christopher Lindsay, of Newport, house carpenter, for the term of four years, eight months and seventeen days.[2][1]

A family tradition claims that Elizabeth was an Indian princess named Gassoset, daughter of Minnetinka. This legend is mentioned in the handwritten William Cory genealogy believed to have been written by Edwin Francis Corey.

"14 old burial plots were removed from South Quidnessett farms to make room for the former Quonset Naval Air Station during WWII in 1941. They were reburied at Quidnessett Memorial Cemetery."[4] There are two footstones labeled E.C. and J. C. believed to be theirs.

The will of John Cory proved 14 July 1712 [North Kingstown Town Council & Probate 5:121-123] is badly burned top, bottom and edges. He named his wife Elizabeth and his broth[burned] as executors. Elizabeth was left land and moveable estate. Also named were son John Corey, son A[-burned-]..given him before by deed. An inventory was taken 30 June 1712.[1]

Anthony Corey was given a houselot by an unnamed father, which he gave to his brother Thomas in his will. "This son, A[burned away] [land] given him before by a Deed [burned away] ... was surely Anthony Corey of Newport who died probably in the summer of 1715, leaving a will dated 8 April 1714 and proved 1 August 1715."[1]

Austin's Genealogical Dictionary named only sons William, John, Elisha, Joseph, Thomas. Anthony's will named his brothers Thomas, William John and Joseph and sisters Dina Card, Hopestill Card, Ann Allen and Elizabeth Cory and also nephew Anthony, son of William.[1]

Inventory, 30 June 1712:[1] wearing apparel, beds, loom, 2 pair of worsted combs, spinning wheel, &c.[2]

I added Elisha Cory because Elisha Corey (sic) did not appear in the search. These two need to be merged, but I am not allowed because of trust with Elisha Corey. Somebody fix this so they can be merged. It appears that there are several other merges that need to be done also.
