Biography

Blandford Coulbeck was involved in a car accident at the age of 18 months, resulting in a depressed fracture of the skull. He spent many weeks in Lincoln General Hospital, where he very nearly did not survive, before his final discharge.

He started school at the Humberston Church of England Primary School, in Tetney Rd. Humberston (1928). He later attended Bursar Street School, Cleethorpes (to 1933) and Thrunscoe Senior School, Parker Street, Cleethorpes (to 1936).

Blandford followed two separate careers during his life. From 1941/1946 R.A.F; 1946/1949 British European Airways (Servicing Engineer) & British Overseas Airways, Treforest, South Wales (Test-Bed Engineer); 1952/1958 V.A. (Supermarine), Swindon. In 1959 he entered the field of work study and O & M.He then worked for the Pressed Steel Co., Swindon, 1958/60; E.H. Bradley, Swindon, 1960/62; Reading Borough Council, 1962/64; Poole Borough Council, Poole, 1964/1985 when he retired.

Blandford's service with the Royal Air Force was spent in the North of Scotland and Shetland, before proceeding overseas to Gibraltar and stations in North Africa. Following a brief return to the U.K. Blandford was again posted abroad to Cairo (Heliopolis), Egypt, Habaniyah and Shaibah, Iraq. He played hockey and soccer both at home and overseas, being a member of the Air Headquarters team at Gibraltar. His U.K service took him to operational RAF stations at Wick (Caithness), Sumburgh and Sullom Voe, Shetland; Gosport, Hants; Tempsford, Beds; Hawarden and Poulton (Rosset, Clwyd); and Acklington, Northumberland.

Before the age of 17, Blandford had studied for and passed academic examinations in preparation for the Civil Service Entrance Examination. Following the war years he studied for and passed the British Institute of Management examination, the Examination for entry to the Institute of Work Study, (third highest pass mark in the U.K. for that year), and for entry to the Institute of Personnel Management.

He later became a Founder Member of the Institute of Management Services. Blandford retired at 62 years old, as Poole Borough Council`s first Chief Officer for all Personnel and Training matters. He has undertaken extensive research into his ancestry which embraces a number of the ancestral branches of his family.
