After leaving school, Frank worked in the family fish-merchant business, on Grimsby Docks, until he enlisted and was assigned to, first, the Lincolnshire Regt. (No. 3/25872) and then the 3rd. Battalion, the Wiltshire Regiment (No. 26938) early in the 1st World War. He served as a Private throughout the war.
Although there is no evidence that he was on active service, he was wounded and sent to Sutton Coldfield for convalescence. Marrying in Birmingham in1921, he and his wife Edna Lane returned to Cleethorpes, where he resumed his employment with his father and two brothers. In 1937 he and his immediate family moved to Birmingham and became shopkeepers.
By 1938, Frank had taken up clerical employment with a repair company. In 1940 he moved with the company to Kirkby Stephen,Westmorland. After the 2nd World War, and a couple of years as a hotelier in Kirkby Stephen, he separated from his wife in 1946. He moved to London, where in the course of time he remarried. Late in life he moved back to Winton (by Kirkby Stephen) living in the hamlet until he died.
