Biography
James Cowan was born April 23, 1788, in Washington county, Virginia, the son of Robert Cowan and and Nancy Ann (Rutledge) Cowan. On March 13, 1817, James married Clarissa Sharp (8 November 1790 – 29 August 1844), daughter of John Sharp, Jr. (1745-1823) and Elizabeth Laughlin Sharp (1748-1825).
