About the Project

The Cowan Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Cowan name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Cowan name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Cowan's), by time period (18th Century Cowan's), or by topic (Cowan DNA, Cowan Occupations, Cowan Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Greetings: My interest is in my Cowan (sic) line which goes back to James Cowan of Pennsylvania, born 1719-21 and died 1789-1810. He was the patriarch of my American Cowan ancestry who allegedly immigrated from County Down Ireland in 1726 with his seven brothers arriving first in Pennsylvania then moving to Virginia before moving on to South Carolina. I realize there are several variant spellings of the Cowan surname, e.g., Cowen, Cowin, Cowand and even Cohen. The last spelling intrigued me since it is known that there were Cohen families from Israel who changed their names upon arrival in the U.S. to the Cowan spelling. I am aware, as well, of Jewish families within Scotland, earlier, before migrating to Ireland and other parts of the United Kingdom. Whether any of my Cowan ancestry were from such populations is unknown at this point though it is plausible due to physical features of my own known Cowan ancestors. Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated! In addition, I would be glad to share any information that I possess that may be of help to those researching their Cowan lines? Thanks...

My oldest record is of John Cowan, born around 1800 and lived in the Parish Of Tynan, Armagh, Ireland. He and his wife, Margaret Mitchell, had eight children: Frances, William, and John (John stayed in Ireland ). Daughters Eliza (Fair), Sarah (Jeffers), Suzzana (Brown?), Margaret (Hastings), Mary jane ( Hughes). Through DNA, I have found John had a 1/2 sibling George Cowan 1795. also that Cowan is from Scotland but lived in Northern Ireland in the 1800s, most likely before this. I you have done your DNA on ancestry GEDmatch, FamilyTree DNA , Find my pass please look and see if you match Thomas Cowan(my brother) Alexander James Cowan, my father 23&me, Jane Cowan on all that me thank you
