Note N504Robert was born in Bridge Street, Kilbirnie on 5 August 1890 to James Craig and Elizabeth Glasgow. SRO records and birth certificate confirm. The birth certificate also confirms that his parents were James Craig, Clerk at Steelworks, and Elizabeth Craig MS Glasgow.

The 1891 census finds Robert aged 8 months at 84 Bridge Street, Kilbirnie. His father James is described as head of household, aged 25 and occupation Joiner's labourer. His mother Elizabeth is also present and described as aged 23. All were born in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire.
