Biography

John Cullen was born August 4, 1840 in Upton, Nottinghamshire, England to John Cullen and Sarah Haslam. [1]

After the death of his mother, John Cullen immigrated to the United States at the age of 10 with his father and siblings in 1851 on the ship, Caroline Nesmith, which departed from Liverpool to New York. [2]

John enlisted at Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York on July 24, 1862 in the New York Infantry to fight in the United States Civil War. He mustered in as a private on September 25, 1862. He was captured in action on July 1, 1863 at Gettysburgh, Pennsylvania and died December 18, 1863 at a hospital in Annapolis, Maryland from wounds or illness sustained in the war. His cause of death was shown in the 1865 New York Census as "starvation in a rebel prison." [4]

John was buried in Annapolis National Cemetery, Annapolis, Arundel, Maryland. [5] [6]
