Samuel Cullen was born in 1843 in England to John Cullen and Sarah Haslam. [1] [2] In 1851, Samuel emigrated to the United States on the ship, Caroline Nesmith, with his widowed father and siblings. [3]

In 1855, Samuel lived in Ogden, Monroe, New York with his father, John Cullen, and siblings - Hannah, Mary, Joseph, John and Samuel. [4]

Samuel served in the Union Army with Company C of the 13th Regiment and Company K of the 6th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery during the United States Civil War. [5] "CULLEN , SAMUEL.—Private, Co C, Thirteenth Artillery; transferred to Go. K, Sixth Artillery, June 27, 1865; mustered out with company, August 24, 1865, at Washington, D. C." [6] After returning home from the Civil War, Samuel farmed with his father, John, and brother, Joseph, in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. [7]

By 1870, Samuel had married Lucy Riddle Duncan and they had a daughter, Annie, age 2. Lucy's son from a previous marriage, Frank, age 9, was also a part of the household. Like his father, John and brother, Joseph, Samuel was a farmer in Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. [8] [9]

In 1880, Samuel lived in Little Valley with his wife, Lucy, stepson, Frank, and three other children - Lucy H., Hattie A., and John M. [10]

Samuel died on January 2, 1882, a few days after his wife, Lucy, leaving their children orphans. They were buried in Little Valley Rural Cemetery, Little Valley, Cattaraugus, New York. [11] [12]
