James was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1774. He was the son of William Cutler and his second wife, Rebecca Cutter. His father died when James was about seven years old. His mother remarried to James Russell, who raised him in his home along with James' sister Rebecca. James married Abigail Russell in Boston in 1807. Together, they raised four children:
James Henry Cutler (1809-1873, m. Elizabeth Wood 20 May 1840, Elizabeth Dale aft. 1843)
William Cutler (1810-1902, m. Sally Pearson 8 Sep 1840)
Abagail Rice Cutler (1813-1894, m. William Wyman 5 May 1831, George B. Archer abt 1853)
Rebecca Ann Cutler (1815-1897, m. Seth Haskell Low 15 Apr 1839)
James was one of the proprietors of the Boston Gazette Newspaper. He died in Boston on 29 Apr 1818. [1]
