Caroline Matilda was born in 1840. She was a daughter of Thomas J. Daines and wife Rachael. Caroline was named as a sister in the will Elizabeth (Massey) Baizley dated 13th January 1911 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
She was married in 1861 to James Torney at the Church of St John the Evangelist in Philadelphia. This is further evidenced by the naming of the couple's first child, Thomas Danes Torney.
Caroline and James Torney moved their family to Newark, New Jersey prior the 1872 birth of their daughter Esther Tera Torney.
She was last enumerated in the census of 1910 in the household of her son-in-law George W. Johnstone, but was listed as the widow of James Torney in the 1915 Newark City Directory. She was at this time boarding with her daughter Esther at 103 Pacific Ave.
