Biography

LOUIS DENTIN is on the Wall of Names at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville, Louisiana; Plaque 10, Left: L'Amitie, arrivee le 6 novembre 1785. Listed with Louis is Eleine Aucoin, his wife; four children: Jeanne Dentin, Marie Anne, Anne and Julie; Francoise Doiron; and Marie Doiron fille de la femme [daughters from Eleine's first marriage to Alexis Gregoire Doiron. [1]

Birth Louis dit la Joie, son of Louis Dantin and Marguerite Marres, was born about 1745 in Port-Toulouse, Ile Royale, Acadie. [2]

Le Grand Derangement When the British seized Nova Scotia from France and began mass deportations of approximately 4000 Acadian settlers who had been there for generations, Louis Dentin's family was rounded up along with everyone in Ile-Royale in the autumn of 1758 through spring of 1759. The Dantins were forced aboard la Reine d'Espagne --the Queen of Spain-- and arrived in St.Malo on November 17, 1758. Of 105 passengers listed, 66 died at sea; 9 more died within 2 months of arrival. Only 28 survived. [3] The list of those who disembarked includes his family, eight of whom are designated "+ en mer," meaning they died at sea:

LA SONDE Marguerite veuve D'ANTIN dit LA JOYE, + en mer
D'ANTIN Gabriel, fils, + en mer
D'ANTIN Marguerite, fille, + en mer
D'ANTIN Michel, fils, + en mer
D'ANTIN Jean, fils, + en mer
D'ANTIN Joseph, fils, + en mer
D'ANTIN Anne, fille, + en mer
D'ANTIN Agathe, fille, + en mer
D'ANTIN Barthélemy, fils
D'ANTIN Louis, fils

Louis' mother is listed as "Widow D'Antin dit La Joie;" family tradition has it that he was killed in battle--this establishes that his death, after 1745 and before 1758, most likely came in resisting the British during the Ile-Saint-Jean Campaign. Louis and his brother Barthélemy, the sole survivors of their family, and homeless in a strange land, were 13 and 15 years old.

This area was comprised of mainly Acadians, French, Spanish and others who affectionately became known as Cajuns. Louis is listed as being 65 years old with his wife and 9 children.[11]
