Biography

Theobald II died a few years after his father, by 1381, when his son John presented to the churches at Bideford and Kilkhampton. “Nothing is known of the life or history of this second Sir Theobald, but there are several grants of land with fair seals of which the last is in the 3rd Richard II, and which must have been very shortly before his death…."[1]

DISPUTED MARRIAGE

The Courtenay pedigree in Vivivan's Visitations of Cornwall (1887), p. 107 states that Margaret Courtenay daughter of Hugh Courtenay of Haccombe, was the wife of Theobald Grenville. Vivian states in the Grenvile pedigree on page 190 (see chart attached to this profile) that Theobald's wife was Margaret Courtenay, daughter of Hugh Courtenay, the 2nd Earl of Devon. Both of these statements appear to be impossible. This was discussed at length at a forum for medeival genealogists on this thread(1) and this post and this thread(2). To summarize, Margaret, the daughter of Hugh the 2nd Earl, was the well-documented wife of John Cobham, and Margaret, the daughter of Hugh of Haccombe was born after Theobald Grenville died!

One plausible supposition is that Theobald's wife was another daughter of Hugh Courtenay, the 2nd Earl of Devon, who had four younger daughters whose husbands (if any) are unknown. A variant of this supposition is that Hugh Courtenay, the 2nd Earl of Devon, had two daughters named Margaret, which was not unheard of.

The identification of Margaret Courtenay as Theobald’s wife first appeared in the 1620 Visitation of Cornwall, which states that Theobald married “Margaret, daughter of Hugh Courtenay.” If Theobald did indeed marry a daughter of Hugh the 2nd Earl, this means that Ann Courtenay, the first wife of his grandson Thomas, was Thomas’s third cousin (if the reconstruction of the Grenville pedigree is accurate).
