Biography

Bill Dekle was the son of Cecil Dekle and Ruth Rustin. He married Laura Mae Young Sep 2nd, 1957 in Nassau, Bahamas.[1]. He was divorced from Laura Mae Young on December 1958 in Dade County, Florida.[2]

He was a member of an Underwater Demolition Team during World War II, training for the planned invasion of Japan. As his team crossed the Pacific toward their target beaches, the captain announced over the ship's speakers that Japan had surrendered. Their demolition mission was scrubbed. Instead, his team was redeployed to China with orders to neutralize pockets of Japanese soldiers who were unaware the war had ended weeks earlier. For his final military assignment, he oversaw the brig in Key West, Florida. One evening, at a bar, when curfew came into effect, the bartender lent him a civilian jacket to wear over his uniform. However, a patrolling Military Police officer saw through his disguise, arrested him, and placed him in the brig. The following morning, the soldiers under his command had a good laugh.

The Underwater Demolition Teams (UDTs) were amphibious units created by the United States Navy during World War II with specialized non-tactical missions. Their primary function was to conduct reconnaissance and underwater demolition of natural or man-made obstacles obstructing amphibious landings. The UDTs were predecessors of the navy's current SEAL teams. With no charts or technology available to guide vessels onto enemy shores, the job fell to the roughly 1,000 young swim scouts of the U.S. Navy’s Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT), who were assigned to reconnoiter enemy beaches and clear coastal defenses ahead of Allied landings during World War II. The UDTs were responsible for preparing the beach for the landing of troops by clearing obstacles, marking channels, and providing information on the beach and surf conditions. The specific tasks of the UDTs during the invasion of Japan included conducting reconnaissance of the seaward approaches to landing beaches, locating, improving, and marking usable channels for landing craft, demolishing natural and artificial obstacles, scouting shores, demolishing reef barriers, and neutralizing enemy mines.

(fix)The training for UDTs was intense and included a variety of skills, including parachute training, guerrilla/counterinsurgency operations, and underwater demolition. UDT candidates must attend and graduate from their rating's 24-week "A" School known as Basic Underwater Demolition school, which is designed to find and develop those who have the commitment and dedication. Successful candidates demonstrate a high level of comfort in the water and the ability to perform in stressful and often uncomfortable environments.

During the 1950's he was a manager for about two years of the Tower Isle Hotel (now Couples Tower Isle) in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
