René was born about 1926. He is a Haitian poet and former communist activist. One of the most prominent figures in Haitian literature, he resided in Cuba as an exile from the Duvalier regime for many years. He founded the Casa de las Américas publishing house. He is the uncle of former Canadian Governor General Michaëlle Jean.
