Biography

Giovanni di Carlo, is born on 23 August and baptized on 25 August 1887 as Joannem. He is the son of Vincenzo di Carlo, age 35 and Maria Santa Castro, age 27. He is one of 12 siblings. His godfather is the unmarried Biagio Puccio.[1][2]

Giovanni immigrates to the US at least twice, first on the S.S. Italia at age 18, arriving in New York on November 8, 1905. He was accompanied by his brother Giuseppe, age 25, sister Luigia, age 16, and his cousin Salvatore, son of Giacomo and Domenica Compagna.

They appear on the manifest as follows:

27. Giuseppe Di Carlo, 25 (b. 1880), single, day laborer: a bracket connects lines 27-29. They are all going to their brother Antonino di Carlo at 2028 First Av., corner of 105th St., NYC

28. Giovanni Di Carlo, brother, 18 (b. 1887), single, day laborer

29. Luigia Di Carlo, sister, 16 (b. 1889), single

30. Salvatore Di Carlo, cousin? 17 (b. 1888), single, farm hand; going to his brother in law Salvatore Ridulfo (“Riddullo”) at 1144 1st Av, NYC[3]

Giovanni returns to Sicily to marry his first cousin once removed, Giovanna Marino, on 6 October 1920 in Corleone. They have twins, one of whom dies at birth. The other, known as Joan, Maria Santa Giovanna, survives.[4]

While Giovanni and Giovanna are married, they live in an apartment below his second cousin and future wife, Antonina Picataci, and her mother. Antonina and Giovanna are also first cousins once removed through Calogero Marino.

Giovanna dies 9 October 1923.[4]

Soon after, Giovanni returns to New York, leaving Joan (also called Maria) with his sister-in-law, Santa, who nurses Joan alongside her oldest son, also named Vincenzo. [4]

John became a U.S. citizen, Naturalization No. 2810938, on March 15, 1929, Bronx, New York. John is a plasterer and owns his own construction firm for more than 40 years.

On 17 April 1929, Antonina arrives to the United States to marry John. She enters with Francesco Di Carlo, John's brother, and Maria di Carlo (as listed on the ship Manifest), John's surviving daughter with Giovanna (who is six years old). [4]

John, age 41 and Antonina, age 30 marry on April 28, 1929, at the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in the Bronx. John and Antonina are second cousins through Calogero Marino.

They go to Niagara Falls, New York, for their honeymoon. To meet visa requirements, Antonina goes to Canada and reenters the United States at Niagara Falls on August 16, 1929 as a Non Quota Emigrant. [4]

John and Antonina have three children: Maria Santa "Marie" (1930), Vincent Angelo "Vince" (1931), and Maria Santa Caterina "Kaye" (1932).

Marie is born January 22, 1930.

Vincent Angelo is born March 5, 1931.

Kaye is born December 26, 1932. But her birth certificate says January 1, 1933. We celebrate her birthday on January 1.[4]

In the 1940 census where I've transcribed his street name as "Bansen," it's probably "Barker," which would match the address he gives when he witnesses Paolo Gambino's naturalization petition.

In the 1940 federal census, taken 8 April, Giovanni Di Carlo, age 52, a "bass plasterer" in the "building line" heads a household at 3256 Bansen Ave in the Bronx. He and his wife, Antonina, age 41, were both born in Italy. He is a naturalized citizen. Their children at home are Mary, 10,[5]

Vincenzo, age 9, and Caterina, 7, all born in New York. Also living with Giovanni's family are his brother, Angelo Di Carlo, 49, and sister-in-law Luisia, 49, both born in Italy. They lived in Palermo in 1935. Angelo is a film salesman in the movie industry.[6]

Death of John

John dies in the Bronx 22 August 1971.[4]

Everybody, including my father, believed he was born on 23 August 1887. Several official records, WWII Draft Registration card, New York death Certificate among others all state 23 Aug 1887. Birth Certificate issued by the Office of Civil Records, Corleone lists August 23 as his birth day. Since my grandmother said his birthday is the 23rd, I am going with August 23, 1887. I believe the Baptism record of 25 August, 1887 is correct for his baptism but wrong for his birthday. Most likely "reporter' or "recorder" error.

Di Carlo-58 and Di Carlo-13 appear to represent the same person because: I believe Giovanni is John, your father, already here in Wikitree.
