Luigia di Carlo is born 22 September 1889 in Corleone and baptized three days later. She is the daughter of Vincenzo di Carlo and Maria Santa Castro. Her godmother is her mother's half-sister Rosa Castro, unmarried daughter of Antonino.[1] Luigia is named after her mother's stepmother, who is also Santa's aunt, and Rosa's mother.

Luigia's sister, Rosa, marries their uncle Pietro on 20 June 1913 at the Church of Carmine in New York.
A few months later in the same church, Luigia marries Antonino Castro, son of Calogero Castro and Rosalia Lombardo, from San Cipirrello, on 20 October 1913 in New York, in the chiesa del Carmine.[4]
