Biography

Robert Tynes was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1953 to his parents, Faye (Tynes) Dick and Marion F. Dick. They lived in Chicago (along with his older brother Ricky) in an apartment on Lake Shore Drive. Marion was attending Northwestern University at the time and Robert lived there for only a few months before the family moved back to Birmingham, Alabama. In 1971 he attended Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee where he received a B.A. degree in 1975, graduating with Honors and Distinction in Art. He later earned an M.F.A. degree in Painting from East Carolina University in 1981. He met and married Bette LaVonne Bates on June 13, 1981 at Craggy Gardens on the Blue Ridge Parkway in Buncombe County near Asheville, North Carolina. After teaching both as a graduate teaching fellow and as an adjunct at East Carolina University, Robert accepted a full time tenure-track position teaching art at Humboldt State University in Arcata, California beginning in the fall of 1982. Robert taught there for two and a half years, until December 1984, when he left to accept a year-long fellowship grant as an artist-in-resident at the Roswell Museum and Art Center’s Artist-in-Residence Program in Roswell, New Mexico. After extending his grant a few months, he left Roswell in April 1986 to participate along with his wife, Bette Bates, in another artist-in-residence program in Ucross, Wyoming. After 31 years of teaching at the University of North Carolina, Asheville, Robert is currently Professor Emeritus of Art at UNC Asheville, since retiring in July 2018, and was formerly Professor of Art in Painting and Drawing (as well as the Director of the S. Tucker Cooke Gallery at UNC Asheville for twenty years). Tynes also taught at the University of Hawaii, in Honolulu as a Visiting Assistant Professor from May 1986 to December 1986, where his first daughter, Alison, was born on August 27, 1986. His other daughter, Robin, was born on January 15, 1990 in Asheville, North Carolina. See http//:www.RobertTynes.com
