Nancy Dodson was born about 1805, in Virginia. Nancy was the daughter of George Dodson and Martha Lockhart.
Nancy married William Davenport on the 16th of August 1823 in Wayne County, Kentucky.[1]
Nancy and William were living in Hendricks County, Indiana by 1830. Nancy's husband, William Davenport's household appears in the 1830 Federal census in Hendricks County, Indiana as follows: 1 male age 20 thru 29; 1 female age 5 thru 9; and 1 female age 20 thru 29.[2]
Nancy's husband William Davenport made his last will and testament on the 13th of September, 1839. William died sometime before the 25th of October, 1839 when his will was admitted for probate. William's will reads in part as follows: "I William Devenport of Hendricks in the State of Indiana do make and publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking and making void all former wills by me at any time heretofore made. . . . Secondly I give to my beloved wife all my estate real and personal so long as she remains my widow but should she marry then heir but her lawful dower, my children now in existence seven in number and provided there should be another which in all probability will be the case, to share equal in the residue and at her death to heir the whole of my estate real and personal and to share the same equally without distinction. In witness whereof I William Davenport the Testator have hereunto set my hand and seal this thirteenth day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty nine. Nancy's household appears as follows: 2 males under age 5; 1 male age 5 thru 9; 1 female under age 5; 1 female age 5 thru 9; 2 females age 10 thru 14; 1 female age 15 thru 19; and 1female age 30 thru 39.[4]
Nancy married second, the widower, Samuel Surber on the 11th of February, 1844 in Hendricks County, Indiana.[5]
Nancy appears in the 1850 Federal census in Hendricks County, Indiana in the household of her husband Samuel Surber. Samuel's household is listed as follows: Samuel age 51, occupation farmer; Nancy age 46; Geroge R. Davenport age 17; Sarah A. Davenport age 18; William T. Davenport age 15; John W. Davenport age 14; Martha E. Davenport age 12; George W. Davenport (the census taker incorrectly listed George as a Davenport when he is George W. Surber) age 12; James M. Davenport (the census taker incorrectly listed James M. as a Davenport when he is James M. Surber) age 5; Mary E. Davenport (the census taker incorrectly listed Mary E. as a Davenport when she is Mary E. Surber) age 3; Joseph Martin age 15, occupation listed as farmer; and John Christie age 14.[6]
Nancy appears in the 1860 Federal census in Hendricks County, Indiana in the household of her husband Samuel Surber. Samuel's household is listed as follows: Samuel age 62; Nancy age 57; George W. Surber age 20; James M. Surber age 15; Mary E. Surber age 13; and Mary Ann R. Surber age 1 month.[7]
Nancy's husband Samuel Surber died intestate on the 23rd of March, 1869 in Hendricks County, Indiana.[8]
Nancy appears in the 1870 Federal census in Hendricks County, Indiana as head of her household. Nancy's household appears as follows: Nancy age 65; James Surber age 25; Mary Surber age 21; Nancy Surber age 1 month; and Angeline Dodd age 17, listed as domestic servant.[9]
Nancy, age 75, appears in the 1880 Federal census in Hendricks County, Indiana in the household of her son James Surber.[10]
Nancy lived with Matilda and Valentine Ballenger, her daughter and son-in-law, from the 3rd of May to the date of her death on the 4th of December, 1882. Matilda and Valentine Ballenger submitted a bill to Nancy's estate for: ". . . services rendered in taking care of and boarding Nancy Surber in last sickness thirty one weeks at $5 per week as per agreement . . ."[11]
Nancy died intestate on the 4th of December, 1882 in Putnam County, Indiana.[12] Nancy was buried in the Devenport Cemetery, North Salem, Hendricks County, Indiana.[13]
Nancy's son James M. Surber applied for administrator of her estate on the 28th of December, 1882 in Hendricks County, Indiana Circuit Court. James' application reads in part as follows: ". . . James M. Surber applies to be appointed administrator of the Estate of Nancy Surber late of Hendricks County, deceased, and being duly sworn, on his oath says, that the said Nancy Surber departed this life in Putnam County, on the 4th day of Dec., 1882 Intestate as he believes, leaving a personal estate to be administered, of the probable value of seven hundred dollars; and he further says that he is a son & heir of Dec'd and as such as entitled to administer on said estate [signed] James M. his X mark Surber . . ."[14]
