Biography

Martha was born in 1804 and baptised on the 31 Oct 1804 at Brailsford, Derbyshire daughter of William Doncaster and Mary Cook who had married at Brailsford on 11 October 1791. [PR] In 1841 William was probably the William Doncaster 70 a brickmaker living alone at Sandiacre Hill. [census] where he was buried on 30 March 1849.

Martha, an Itinerant Minister, was stationed in Tunstall (1822), Darlaston and Ramsor (6 mths each in 1823) and Oakengates (1824) before her marriage.[Geof Dickinson] [Primitive Methodist Magazine 1909]

She married John Ride, a widower on 18 March 1824 at Oakengates. Martha ceased as an itinerant minister in her own right when she married but continued as an active preacher working with John.

In 1841 Martha and John, and their family Mira (15), John (13), Priscilla (12), Mary (10), Edwin (8), William (5), and Jabez (2) are living in the quarters beside the Primitive Methodist Chapel in Salem Court, 27 Minster Street, Reading. Also in the household is Joseph Williamson, a preacher. [1]

14 Sep 1849, the barque, Minerva set sail from London, England via Plymouth and arrived in Melbourne, Victoria on 16 Jan 1850. The newspapers of the day, listed Mr. and Mrs. Ryde and family on the passenger list for Melbourne[2].

Martha died on the 12 November 1873 at her daughter Mira's home in Brighton, Victoria, Australia.[3]. The cause of death was uterine cancer. The North Eastern Ensign of Friday November 14, 1873 has the following news: "We regret to have to record the death of another old and respected resident of Benalla, Mrs. Martha Ride, which occurred on the 12th inst."

She was laid to rest at the Benalla Cemetery[4].
