Biography

Mary Charlene Douthit (often known as Charlene) was born on 21 November 1910 at Norfolk, Virginia, United States. She was the daughter of John Henry Douthit and Mary Allen (or Ellen).

In the 1920 United States Census, she was in a household at Norfolk with her parents and 6 siblings.

On 25 June 1939, at Norfolk, aged 27, she married George Jeter, Jr., aged 28. The marriage was conducted by a minister of the Baptist Church. She was resident at Richmond, and they had obtained a marriage certificate on 21 June.

On 27 August 1958, they separated, and she obtained a divorce on 22 September 1959 at Norfolk. She was aged 40 and resident at Richmond.

On 23 December 1960, at Richmond, aged 48, she married Shavers Ballard, aged 49. The marriage was conducted by I. H. Hines, minister of the 31st Street Baptist Church. She was a divorced teacher resident at Richmond.

She passed away on 20 February 1994, probably in Virginia, aged 80. She was buried at Riverview Cemetery, Richmond, Virginia, and her second husband was later buried at the same location.
